HISTORY
"When the Lindy hop became popular in 1927, the "American Society of Teachers of Dancing" (A.S.T.D.) and the Dance Teachers Business Association (D.T.B.A.) denounced the Lindy as: "a fad and would not last out the winter, and its devotees were victims of economic instability.
The East Coast Swing is an offshoot of the Fox trot or Syncopated Two-Step. East Coast Swing is an "invented dance (a non Folk)," modified from a prior original form (Lindy Hop) by the 'American Society of Teachers of Dancing' in 1942. (they were already teaching this style to stock movie dancers well before 1942, but in 1942, it became official to the public as a dance, HOWEVER IT WAS NOT NAMED AS SUCH.).........................
Technically, we did not have a term "East Coast Swing" until there was a "West Coast Swing" and vice-a-versa" (1)
"originally known as "Eastern Swing" by Arthur Murray Studios, the name East Coast Swing became more common between 1975 and 1980.[1]
The dance evolved from the Lindy Hop with the work of the Arthur Murray dance studios in the 1940s.[2] East Coast Swing can be referred to by many different names in different regions of the United States and the World. It has alternatively been called Eastern Swing, Jitterbug, American Swing, East Coast Lindy, Lindy (not to be confused with Lindy Hop), and Triple Swing.[3] Other variants of East Coast Swing that use altered footwork forms are known as Single Swing[4] or "Single-step Swing" (where the triple step is replaced by a single step forming a slow, slow, quick, quick rhythm common to Foxtrot), and Double Swing (using a tap-step footwork pattern).[5]" (2)1) Streetswings Dance History Archives: Swing'
